Ah, the art of the perfect Instagram. Framed, filtered, and hashtagged just so… but squares can be deceiving! This month on the Travel Linkup, we’re talking about the myriad travel blogger problems, from FOMO to shoddy wifi to the highs and lows of getting that perfect shot. What would you add to the list? You can join the linkup below… or just laugh at my Instagram Behind the Scenes!
I have to say right at the outset that this post is inspired by the amazing Amy of Amy and the Great World, who challenged me to collect my own Instagram mishaps. You can find her far funnier captions and gorgeous shots here and here!
This photo says: Oh look, one of the many gorgeous photogenic buildings all over London that I walk past all the time
Behind the scenes: It’s tightly cropped and taken at this angle to hide the rubbish sack near the door. It’s also mid-April but still looks and feels like winter. Sort it out London!

This photo says: It might be raining but we have the beautiful city of Porto in our sights and a gorgeous red umbrella – life is awesome!
Behind the scenes: This was such a fail on my part – I thought the Gardens of the Crystal Palace surrounded an actual beautiful historic palace. Given this, I dragged my friend Emma, in the pouring rain, on a 20 minute walk because it was slightly quicker than public transport. In fact, the gardens are now home to a brutalist convention hall, which we couldn’t even see inside. We decided to check out the view of the river, but could barely make out the banks. We then tried to walk down to the river, but got completely stymied at every turn and ended up having to climb all the way back up the hill. When my umbrella was then destroyed. At that point there was only one option… a huge lunch and port tasting. A good way to redeem a day!
This photo says: casual snap of my delicious brunch… and boom, I’m eating
Behind the scenes: I ordered the tea and then made myself wait to drink it until my food came. And fortunately I was in the company of bloggers when it did, as I took about 20 shots, pre- and post-egg cutting, to get this one. At least it didn’t get cold too quickly!
It stopped raining so we celebrated with #sorbet! #twofeetinNZ #sisters

This photo says: Just me and my sister hanging out, eating sorbet – such fun!
Behind the scenes: Despite it being summer, we were going stir-crazy in my parents’ house as it wouldn’t stop raining. We escaped to nearby Matakana, where my sister’s boyfriend left his delicious thick shake to melt while he moved around us trying to get a non-squinty, well-lit shot. And we thought this one was a keeper… but if you look closely, it’s totally being photobombed by the kid in the back! Not so subtle photoshoot on our part, then…
This photo says: just another beautiful tranquil morning in Marmaris, Turkey.
Behind the scenes: tranquil… apart from the 15 workmen loudly putting together a pier behind me.
Pretty amazing morning at #Preikestolen!

This photo says: look how fit and outdoorsy and totally unafraid of this cliff-edge I am!
Behind the scenes: I queued to have my turn at the edge of Preikestolen, and of course took a photo of my feet because… well, you’ve seen the blog name, right?! Photos of my face also show the mild terror of being this close to a cliff-drop – including the moment where I nearly sent myself sideways over the edge. Totally worth it for this phenomenal view!?
What can I say… I love a photo op. I offer my heartfelt apologies to all my friends and family that I have ever made wait to take a bite, or while I take “just one more picture”! At least you’re used to me and my ways 🙂
